The Summer English Language Academy is offered during the months of July and August for both elementary and secondary age students. Students may attend for a minimum of 3 weeks to a maximum of 6 weeks.
Students under 18 years of age must have a custodian, in Canada, to register for the SELA program.

Elementary Program
At the elementary level, the SELA program is offered to students between the ages of 10 – 13.

English classes, using curriculum specifically designed for international students, will be held Monday to Friday, from 9am to 12pm, followed by a lunch break. All students must bring a packed lunch to school. Each afternoon students will enjoy a variety of immersion activities with Canadian students.

An extended program is provided between 7:30 am to 9:00 am and 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm and involves additional recreational programming suited to each age group. Supervised excursions, complementing weekly themes, are planned each Wednesday.

Each weekend (Saturday & Sunday) will be free time for students to explore their communities and the Greater Toronto Area. Students living with host families are encouraged to participate in family activities.

Secondary Program

At the secondary level, the SELA program is offered to students between the ages of 14 - 18.

English curriculum specifically designed for international students will engage participants four days a week from 9am to 3pm, with integrated excursions every Wednesday. A lunch break is scheduled at 12:00pm. All students must bring a packed lunch to school.

Each weekend (Saturday & Sunday) will be free time for students to explore their communities and the Greater Toronto Area. Students living with host families are encouraged to participate in family activities.

Homestay accommodations are available to students 12 to 18 years of age. Students under the age of 12 must live with a relative residing in York Region.

Students will reside with host families arranged through the Board’s YRLC Homestay Services. Host families for summer students will be strategically located within close range to the school location with easy access to public transit to school every day.

Host families provide a private bedroom with access to a bathroom, laundry facilities and kitchen. Three daily meals are included in the homestay fee. Packaged lunches will be provided during school days and excursions.

Students choosing Homestay should arrive on Sunday, the day before the program start date, and check out on Saturday, the day after the program end date.

English teachers are ESL certified teachers of YRDSB and specifically trained to teach international students. Classes are divided by age group and English level.

Each student will take the English placement assessment upon arrival.

Class size is limited to a maximum of 15 students.

Excursions on Wednesday will include academic components learned throughout the week leading up to the excursion. This will give students the opportunity to practice English, using language they’ve already studied during the excursions and afternoon activities.
